Firming & Tightening

Thermage FLX

Radiofrequency heat that firms skin from within. Usually one session, and the change arrives over months — not on the day.

Procedure time

About 45–90 minutes

Anaesthesia

Usually none; vibration & cooling for comfort

Sessions

Usually one, repeated after 1–2 years

Downtime

Little to none; brief redness

What it is

Heat that firms, from the inside

Thermage FLX is monopolar radiofrequency. The tip heats a whole volume of the deeper skin while the surface is cooled and protected, so the heating happens where collagen lives without burning the top.

That heat does two things: it makes existing collagen contract straight away, and it starts a repair response that lays down new collagen over the following months. The result is firmer, tighter skin — a job different from filling a line or relaxing a muscle.

It heats a volume, which is what separates it from Ultherapy: that treatment focuses ultrasound to precise points including the deep SMAS. The two are often planned together, structure first and firmness after.

How it works

Three things happen, in order

The order is why the mirror on the day looks much like the mirror before it.

  1. Deep heating, surface cooled

The tip delivers radiofrequency into the dermis while cooling the surface with each pulse. The target is a controlled deep heat; the top layer is deliberately protected.

  2. Collagen contracts

The heat makes existing collagen fibres tighten immediately. This gives a small early firmness, but it is not the main event.

  3. New collagen builds

Over the following two to six months the skin lays down fresh collagen. That is where the real tightening comes from — which is why the result is judged months later, not on the day.

Treatment areas

Where it is usually used

Chosen for mild to moderate laxity, where skin has softened but has not descended a long way. Which areas suit you is decided after your skin is examined.

  • Full face

Overall firmness and a smoother surface across the cheeks.

  • Jawline

A cleaner line where the lower face has begun to soften.

  • Eyes

The eyelid tip treats crepey, heavy upper lids and fine lines.

  • Neck

Laxity and horizontal lines below the jaw.

  • Abdomen

Loose skin on the body, including after weight change.

  • Thighs & arms

Crepey skin and mild laxity on the limbs.

Who it is for

A good fit for mild to moderate laxity

It suits some concerns and not others. Better to hear that at consultation than after the fact.

  • Skin that has softened or lost firmness, but has not dropped far
  • A softening jawline or crepey texture on the face or body
  • Anyone who prefers a single session with essentially no downtime
  • People happy to wait two to six months for the full change
  • Those wanting to firm skin without an injectable
  • Visitors who can attend a single appointment on their trip

Not suitable, or not yet

  • An implanted electronic device such as a pacemaker or defibrillator
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Active infection or inflamed skin in the treatment area
  • Advanced sagging with descended tissue: a lift, or Ultherapy, may fit better
  • Anyone needing a visible change by a fixed date

Metal or permanent implants, or recent filler in the area, are discussed and planned around before anything is done.

Planning it around a trip

Thermage in Seoul: what visitors usually want to know

Thermage is one of the easier treatments to fit into a holiday: it is usually a single session, there is no wound, and the result keeps developing after you fly home.

One visit, not a course

Most people have one session and are reassessed months later, once the collagen response has run its course. Allow a few hours on the day for the consultation, preparation and the treatment itself, then carry on with your plans.

What you will notice, and when

Some firmness can be felt soon after, but the real change builds gradually over the following months as new collagen is laid down. That means the result you judge it by will appear at home, not in Seoul — so we take photographs before treatment to compare against.

Face, eyes or both

Thermage FLX uses different tips for different areas: a larger tip for the face and jawline, and a small, dedicated eye tip for crepey eyelid skin and fine lines around the eyes. Tell us which area bothers you most and we will say whether Thermage is the right tool for it.

Ask about the device and the tip

A common piece of advice for anyone booking lifting in Korea is to check the device. We use genuine Thermage FLX with a new, sealed tip for each patient, and we tell you which tip and how many pulses are planned before we start.

About price

Many visitors find Thermage in Korea less expensive than at home. The cost depends on the area and the number of pulses, so you get a clear quote after the consultation, before anything is done.

Flying and aftercare

There is no wound to look after. Mild redness usually settles within a day, and flying the next day is fine for most people. Use sunscreen and a gentle moisturiser, and skip saunas and very hot showers for a day or two.

Questions

Asked most often

Does it hurt?

You feel a brief deep heat with each pulse, balanced by a cooling and vibration system built into the tip. Most people find it very manageable. Settings are adjusted to your comfort during the session rather than pushed through.

How many sessions will I need?

Usually one. It is not a weekly course. Many people repeat it after one to two years as the effect gradually relaxes.

When will I see the result?

There is a small immediate firmness, but the real change builds as new collagen forms over roughly two to six months. It is judged at that point, not on the day.

How is it different from Ultherapy?

Thermage heats a volume of the dermis with radiofrequency to firm skin. Ultherapy focuses ultrasound to precise points, reaching the deeper SMAS layer for lifting. They address different things and are often planned together.

Is there any downtime?

Very little. Some redness or mild swelling can occur for a few hours, and makeup can usually go on the same day. There is no wound to care for.

Can I have it if I have a pacemaker?

No. Radiofrequency is not used in anyone with an implanted electronic device such as a pacemaker or defibrillator. Tell us about any implant at consultation.

Does Thermage FLX actually work?

For mild to moderate laxity, it can give a noticeable firming and a cleaner jawline over several months. It will not do what a surgical lift does, and it works best when expectations match that. We will tell you honestly at the consultation if your skin needs something else.

Is Thermage cheaper in Korea?

Often, yes, which is one reason people combine it with a trip. The cost depends on the area and how many pulses are needed, so we give you a quote after the consultation.

Can Thermage be done around the eyes?

Yes, with the dedicated eye tip, which is designed for thin eyelid skin. It is used for hooding from loose skin and fine lines, not for fat bags or a heavy brow, which need a different approach.

How do I know the tip is genuine?

Ask to see it opened. A genuine Thermage FLX tip is single-use and registers in the device, and we open a new one in front of you for each treatment.

Can I fly home the day after Thermage?

For most people, yes. There is no wound, and any redness or slight swelling usually settles within a day.

  • Thermage: the nonablative radiofrequency for rejuvenation

Sukal SA, Geronemus RG. Clinics in Dermatology 2008;26(6):602–607. PubMed 18940540

A review of how monopolar radiofrequency tightens skin by heating the dermis while protecting the surface, and of its use for mild to moderate laxity — the mechanism described on this page.

    What it does not show

it is a narrative review, not a controlled trial, and describes the device generation of its time rather than the current FLX system.

  • Monopolar radiofrequency facial tightening: a retrospective analysis of efficacy and safety in over 600 treatments

Weiss RA, Weiss MA, Munavalli G, et al. Journal of Drugs in Dermatology 2006;5(8):707–712. PubMed 16989184

A large real-world series: measurable facial tightening with temporary side effects in a small minority of treatments and no permanent complications reported.

    What it does not show

it is retrospective, not randomised, and reflects earlier devices and protocols; individual results vary.

  • Long-Term Efficacy and Safety of a Novel Monopolar Radiofrequency Device for Skin Tightening: A Prospective Randomized Controlled Study

Wang Z, Li L, Zhang X, et al. Lasers in Surgery and Medicine 2025;57(3):259–264. PubMed 39957006

A modern randomised study showing skin-tightening improvements maintained over a long follow-up, consistent with the gradual, collagen-driven effect described here.

    What it does not show

it tests a specific device, which is not necessarily the exact system or settings used for any one patient.

Not sure this is the right treatment?

That is what the consultation is for. We will look at your skin and tell you what we would recommend and what we would leave alone — including whether firmness, lifting or skin quality is really the thing to treat.
